Paxton’s raids on Latinos are like from a dictator’s playbook | Letters

I am a third-generation Texan. I have three degrees from the University of Texas. I have traveled around the country and around the globe and proudly claim my Texas roots.  I have never been ashamed of my Texas heritage until Monday, when I first heard of Attorney General Ken Paxton’s illegal raids against Latino activists, 87-year-old retired teachers and Latino candidates for election. 
Claiming to be the result of an as yet-unfounded investigation into voter fraud, Paxton’s flimsy justification for these predawn raids is straight out of the petite dictator’s playbook and has no place in the United States. Paxton should be impeached (again) and his actions renounced in the strongest terms.

Does anyone else see the irony of our Governor and AG throwing felons off the voter registration lists while they actively campaign for a felon running for President? A felon who in fact is not allowed to vote in his own home state.
Need I ask, what is wrong with this picture?

I find it laughable that Senator Cornyn, who is seeking the U.S. Senate minority/majority leadership position, does not understand that border security is the responsibility of Congress. 
Cornyn, along with his colleagues, had the opportunity to address the border security issue under both the Trump administration and the Biden administration, and they did nothing. There was a bipartisan border security bill introduced during the current session of Congress and the Republicans refused to pass that bill to ensure the GOP presidential, Senate and House of Representative candidates could run on the border security issue during the November elections.
Cornyn who is a former Texas Supreme Court judge, wants Texans to vote for a convicted felon for the highest office in the nation. Hypocrisy? Or Texas Republicans burying their heads in the sand when it comes to elected members of their party.

It appears that every time former President Trump has any connection with military cemeteries, he puts his fake bone-spurred foot in his mouth. All reports say that his recent visit to Arlington National Cemetery broke federal law that no political/campaign photos are allowed on that hallowed ground. My guess is that he may be trying to counteract the prior negative publicity about his refusal to visit the cemetery in France where some of our military heroes are buried – heroes he referred to as “losers.”
 Uncles on both sides of my family served in WW II, and fortunately, they all returned alive. But if Trump were to visit any cemetery where they are now buried, I would consider his visit to be an offensive, grotesque insult.

The American Red Cross has reported an emergency blood shortage caused by the extreme heat this summer, along with a busy travel season and a drop in donors. A lack of blood donations could cause the loss of many lives.
Despite our disagreements on the finer points of politics, religion and social issues, we all agree that life is a beautiful miracle. We understand that saving a life is saving all humanity.
I urge every able and healthy Texan to join me in donating blood in the coming days. It all starts with finding a blood drive—look for ones arranged by churches, mosques or your employer —and scheduling an appointment. The rest of the steps are simple: eat healthily, hydrate well, and donate. May God bless every donor with good health.
